“Time has a way of making liars out of us all”

Emily Dickinson (Poet)

Last week I sent out an email and at that point in time every word of it was true stating that we were moving not closing.

Unfortunately time has made a reluctant liar out of me. After intensive number crunching, shop hunting, business analysis and several options falling through I have found that with a 30% rise in overseas online sales and an over 50% rise in local overheads in the last 18mths, The Stitch shop is no longer a viable business.

So it is with huge sadness and heavy hearts Penny and I have decided to close. This decision was made in the last 4 days but was not made lightly and is final.

Tenants have been found (in the last week!) for 27a Colombo St and they wish to move in on October 20th, which we have no choice but to go with. This means that Stitch will close its doors for the last time at 4pm on Friday 17th October.

I know that a lot of you will have questions and I will try to answer them as best as I can in the FAQ below however please feel free to email me (fenella@stitchplayroom.com)  or phone (332 1820) or pop in if you have any questions not listed below.

I need to make a sincere apology to the people I have personally spoken to in the last 3 days regarding our “move”. I abhor dishonesty and have what some people have described as an excess of moral fortitude, so for me to have had to lie or evade questions has eaten me up inside. I just hope that you understand that Penny and I not only needed time to get our heads around the decision but also time to make plans and to gather the answers to the inevitable questions. We needed to get our ducks in a row and our emotions in check. Our grief is not only in the business and employment and fabric access, our grief is the loss of the community we have created which was always the heart of Stitch.

Please remember that Penny, Catherine and I are not dropping off the side of the earth. We are locals and we will in time be involved in craft communities and groups again. We hope to hear from lots of you regularly through email, facebook etc.

Time is short so I need to get practical:

Closing Down SALE!!!
Our closing down sale starts on Wednesday 8th October (Penny’s Birthday) at 10am and will continue until either the stock is gone or 4pm Friday 17th October . Get in early if you don’t want to miss out! Everything has to go!!!!!

Our hours remain 10am – 4pm daily (7 days a week)

There will be no rainchecks, holds, laybys.

We will have 2 tills operating BUT only have the one eftpos machine so bring cash if you are wanting to get through faster!!!!

Aside from the shop model Opal 670, which will be in our sale, we will no longer be selling Husqvarna machines or parts. All Husqvarna related questions, orders and warranty issues, servicing etc will be handled by Quilters Quarters in Rangiora.

Gift Vouchers

If you have a Stitch Gift Voucher/certificate hanging around you will need to use it by 4pm Friday 17th October which is when we cease trading. Gift certificates cannot be exchanged for cash but we will be having a giant sale so the perfect time to use them!

Loyalty Cards

As of 4pm Tuesday 7th October our loyalty card program will end and the cards will be disposed of. Don’t worry too much though as you will get far greater discounts from the closing down sale!

Welcome to Stitchville

This group will continue to go ahead with a change in venue. The next class is Saturday the 18th October and will be held at Penny’s freshly renovated home just down the road from Stitch. If you are in this group you will have several options. I recommend you get in touch with us for the address for the next class and to get the options relevant to you. We will endeavor to contact you all however we ask for your patience and help as the next few weeks will be chaotic.

Other Scheduled Classes

Any scheduled classes will go ahead although there will be a change in venue. Your tutor will be in touch to let you know of new venue for the classes.

Coffee Groups and UFO days

Unfortunately due to the extremely limited time frame we have to cancel all coffee groups and UFO days this week to leave the classroom free for the sale.

I would like to have one last Thursday Coffee Group on Thursday 16th October 10am -12pm. I am so so sorry ladies, I am going to miss you all terribly.

Guardian Angels Quilters (NICU group)

Unfortunately the official group will be disbanded however you are still welcome to make quilts and drop them at the reception of the NICU!!!

Events – Manawatu Symposium and Crafty Chch

We have pulled out of Manawatu Symposium and will unfortunately not be able to attend. However we will be at Crafty Christchurch with the last of our stock.

This will be your last chance to shop with us so please make sure you stop by and say Hi! We won’t be having big discounts/sales at Crafty Christchurch as it wouldn’t be fair to the other standholders however we are tucking away some of our very new stock to have available there so plenty to look at and buy!

I also have to say that this years Crafty Christchurch is on a whole other playing field to the last 2 years, we have flushing toilets, parking, no mud, plenty of lighting, and a solid walled/roofed building, what luxury!

Aside from that we have more merchants, more demos and workshops and more exhibitions (some pretty high level and exciting ones!) and are supporting the very worthy Christchurch City Mission so PLEASE make sure you attend, bring some non perishables for under the donation tree, ornaments for on the tree and your happy smiles!

Thurs 30th Oct 5pm – 9pm
Fri 31st Oct 10am – 6pm
Sat 1st Nov 10am – 6pm

$7 entry

Table Tennis Centre, Blenheim Rd (Opposite the Warehouse!)

More information to come

We will be in touch again to update you, let you know what Penny, Catherine and I are going to do from here. We are discussing options for private tuition from Penny and Catherine etc but to be honest none of us know what will be next for us just yet. For now we need to focus on wrapping up Stitch and getting through the next few chaotic weeks.

Well Stitchers, thats it for now.

With love, respect and very best wishes,

Fenella, Penny, Catherine and Mya Shop Dog.

Open 10am – 4pm 7 days a week!

(Closed on Public Holidays unless advised otherwise)

We are located at the hills end of Colombo Street, number 27A, next door to Look Hairsalon, opposite Malcolm Ave.
